UN seeks help from blockchain in refining Afghanistan’s urban development

In this post:

UN hopes to rebuild a new Afghanistan, which boasts of safe and transparent urban development, using the abilities of blockchain, as reported by The Sociable. The international government institution is tasked with streamlining land records management using blockchain solutions.

As a part of the City for All program, Stephane Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General Speaker, confirmed that United Nations Office of Communication and Information Technologies (UN-OICT) together with the government of Afghanistan are working on this initiative to ensure the land registry process is carried out systematically, devoid of malpractices.

“The blockchain solution shall serve as a key tool in the delivery of these fundamental components.”

About City for All campaign

The City for All campaign was initiated by the UN in 2016 and aimed at revamping 12 Afghanistan cities and turn them into well-planned and well-governed metropolises.

Anticipating that a majority of the Afghan population will move to the cities in the next fifteen years, the initiative comes as a piece of welcome news for effective land management and urbanization strategies and all together for an improved economy.

Blockchain steps in

In doing so, blockchain will play a major role in offering a digital, immutable and unambiguous platform for serving the needs of urban designing and planning. It will tackle the main pain points of Afghanistan’s infrastructure which include inapt legal identification processes and insufficient transparency in financial transactions.

Following a recent agreement between UN-OICT and UN-Habitat, the two UN branches will further their development plan across South Asia, with a primary focus on Afghanistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

However, it is not the first time the UN has turned to blockchain in achieving its developmental milestones. In 2018, the global organization sought blockchain’s assistance in curbing health care issues in East Africa. Following its success, it also launched a blockchain-empowered credit bureau in Sierra Leone.

Will blockchain come to UN’s rescue this time as well and help in reconstructing a new Afghanistan? Only time will tell!
