New Zealand police seized crypto worth $6.7M from movie pirate

New Zealand law enforcing agencies have arrested Jaron David Mclvor, a programmer and movie pirate. The police also seized crypto assets worth 6.7 million USD and more than a million in bank funds.

New Zealand police arrest movie pirate and seize his funds

The law agencies made the arrest after investigating an online movie piracy case. According to too the reports, Jaron was living with a relative that is sought after by US tax agencies. Notably, he lived on rental property and had little wealth at the place.

Banks and other financial institutions have the authority to freeze bank accounts if there is a suspicion that they earned it through illicit means. This allowed the police to seize more than a million dollars that he had stored in his bank account.

Jaron was facing charges of committing money laundering as he earned money through illegal means. Apparently, Jaron had assisted in developing a website that published pirated movies. Allegedly, he used to upload movies on the website without permission from the publishers.

IRS and PayPal assisted in the arrest of movie pirate

Reportedly, the United States’ Internal Revenue Service had informed New Zealand authorities about Jaron David. The IRS claimed that they received reports of suspicious activity by PayPal regarding Jaron. After studying the report, the IRS tracked Jaron to New Zealand and subsequently informed the authorities which arrested him.

Jaron is not the only one involved in movie piracy as reports suggest that other such actors were residing in Canada, Vietnam, and the United States.

Jaron had earned around 2 million dollars through the website, which he received through PayPal and Stripe. Apparently, he had accumulated the remaining wealth by trading digital currencies.
