In a blow to crypto adoption, MailChimp bans CryptoPotato account, citing violation of its policy. The recent ban has come as a surprise for the CryptoPotato’s twenty thousand (21K) odd weekly subscribers. They were unable to receive their weekly newsletter as MailChimp has suspended the mail-service account of CryptoPotato without giving any prior notice.
Unfortunately, the email automation platform now joins YouTube in banning crypto entities without giving any reasonable logic. MailChimp responded that their automated abuse prevention system called Omnivore had flagged CP’s account under policy violations criteria. The actions or activities of the account do not comply with their ‘Acceptable Use Policy’ and represent a risk to the firm’s deliverability. Subsequently, they have closed the said account.
After YouTube crypto censorship, now MailChimp bans CryptoPotato
Recently, the YouTube crypto censorship row garnered much attention in the media. First YouTube now MailChimp bans CryptoPotato signifying the resistance that certain tech companies are posing towards the crypto industry.

What’s striking is that the ‘acceptable use policy’ of MailChimp also flags pornography under similar criteria. This will certainly not go down well with the crypto community. In April 2018, MailChimp faced similar public backlash after it shut down cryptocurrency-related accounts. However, they then issued a statement clarifying that cryptocurrency-related information does not come under prohibition.
Social giants undertaking extensive crypto censorship
It is interesting to note that CryptoPotato’s newsletter is in circulation since 2016. What made MailChimp take such arbitrary action in 2020? This year has already seen many such similar actions by large social media companies. YouTube shut down many famous cryptocurrency-based channels. The incident was termed as an ‘error,’ and subsequently, all the banned channels were made functional.
Crypto censorship is on the rise. Facebook and Google Ads are also joining the bandwagon. When MailChimp bans CryptoPotato, people are left wondering where this discrimination will lead to! Finding viable alternative solutions for peaceful mutual co-existence is the need of the hour.
