Mercedes-Benz cars turn to blockchain for sustainable mobility

In this post:

In its efforts to foster sustainable mobility, the German motor giant Mercedes-Benz has joined forces with London-based blockchain company Circulor to launch a blockchain pilot experiment to track CO2 emissions efficiently, said the official media release on 30th January 2020.

In line with Startup Autobahn, a platform that offers opportunities to young tech companies in the automobile sector, the project will leverage blockchain to attain transparency in CO2 emissions in the cobalt supply chain. Utilizing the power of blockchain, the company will monitor the emission levels of different climate-impacting gases, and then track cobalt which makes way into the supply chain through various recycling sources.

The Mercedes-Benz cars, which are built in agreement with its holistic and ambitious target of Ambition2039 for climate-neutral mobility, aim for a carbon-free transport fleet within the next twenty years.

The press release states that the blockchain-powered system will document the flow and the contents of the raw materials along with CO2 emission levels at each step of the manufacturing process. It will also carefully follow Mercedes-Benz’s deep-rooted policy of attaining the circular economy goal, which is to optimize the use of recycled materials.

Moreover, the system will track whether or not the parent firm, Daimler, operates by the sustainability standards set for working conditions, employee rights, ethical and sustainable business practices, and legal compliance. With this pilot project, Mercedes-Benz cars will pave the way for transparency in the supply chain across all levels, said the announcement.

On Thursday, the company confirmed will be actively incorporating the inputs from this partnership into the new initiative.

Commenting on becoming the first-ever automobile company to explore blockchain to plot CO2 emissions across the supply chain of battery cells, Markus Schäfer, who is among the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, remarked that Mercedes-Benz would continue to outclass itself and set the bar very high with Ambition2039. It is our vision to obtain one hundred percent transparency and traceability in our supply chains, and that cannot be achieved without persistent and unhindered cooperation from our suppliers, Schäfer affirmed.
