In a surprising announcement, Destiny 2 Game Director Joe Blackburn has revealed his retirement from Bungie, just months before the highly anticipated expansion, “The Final Shape,” is set to release.

The upcoming expansion is expected to mark the conclusion of the ongoing Light vs. Darkness saga that has captivated Destiny 2 players for the past few years.

The final shape expansion was delayed to June 2024

Originally slated for a February 2024 release, “The Final Shape” expansion faced unforeseen circumstances that led to its delay until June 2024. Despite this setback, the Destiny 2 community has been eagerly awaiting the epic conclusion to the game’s evolving storyline, which is now closer than ever to realization.

In a heartfelt and emotional post, Joe Blackburn expressed his gratitude to the development team at Bungie for their unwavering dedication to creating a game that has captured the hearts of players worldwide.

Blackburn stated, “Heading into this milestone, I’ve gotten to play 100s of hours of The Final Shape, and what the world-class talent here at Bungie has created has quickly become (one) of the things I’m most proud to have worked on throughout my career.”

Leadership transition to Tyson Greene

While Joe Blackburn will not depart immediately, he has announced that he will pass the torch to Tyson Greene in February, coinciding with the end-to-end testing phase for “The Final Shape” expansion.

Tyson Greene, a well-respected figure within Bungie, has played pivotal roles in crafting Exotic weapons for Destiny 1 and developing the PvP mode in the iconic Halo series.

Blackburn remarked, “I’ve still got some time before I pass the torch, but as I look forward to taking a big break from social media, I know I’ll see y’all around the Tower. It will be great to play Destiny alongside all of you.”

The future of Destiny 2 under Tyson Greene’s leadership

With Joe Blackburn’s impending departure, Destiny 2 players and the gaming community are eager to witness the direction the game will take under the leadership of Tyson Greene.
