TL;DR Breakdown:
- Discord CEO denies plans to integrate crypto wallets on the platform.
- The company faced backlash from the community after the CEO previously hinted at possible crypto integration.
- The platform’s main focus will remain on increasing user security.
Just 3 days ago, Discord CEO Jason Citron hinted that the popular digital media platform will soon integrate crypto wallets. He tweeted a photo that showed the integration of Ethereum based crypto wallets MetaMask and Wallet Connect with Discord.
However, the tweet flooded with negative reactions from the community, which has apparently placed the company’s crypto integration plans on hold. After only 3 days of the initial tweet, Citron replied to the post saying that Discord doesn’t have any current plans to change its internal functions.
Lately, Discord has been showing some interest in the crypto space. Earlier this week, the popular platform released a survey to understand the biggest Web3 needs, and most of it was focused on NFTs and crypto. The survey also received tremendous backlash from the community, who are seemingly vocal against any crypto integration on the platform.
Why is the Discord community concerned about crypto?
Discord users are worried that integrating crypto on the platform can change its core policies and functions, which made the platform so unique and loved in such a small time. The company is only 6 years old, and it’s already valued at over $15 billion. The community fears that crypto integration can influence the company to ditch its Nitro subscriptions, which helps the platform stay ad-free.
There’s also concern that such integrations will increase NFT and crypto scams on the platform, which is already a big problem for the community. Yesterday, the followers of the popular digital artist Beeple, lost almost 40 ETH after the artist’s official Discord channel was hacked. The hackers announced a fake NFT auction from the artist’s official channel, which saw a lot of users sign up for a low-cost NFT drop.
So, amid this backlash from the community, it’s safe to say that Discord won’t be integrating crypto on their platform any time soon. Citron also mentioned that the platform will continue to focus on increasing user protection against scams, fraud, and spam, before thinking about the wider applications of Web3.
