National AI Advisory Committee Formed to Address AI Regulation

In this post:

  • The committee provides the president of the United States with general AI-related workforce issues.
  • The spotlight has shifted to AI and its potential capacity to affect people’s everyday lives.
  • The chair of NAIAC believed that while technology regulation provides prospects for great premises, it can also jeopardize human life.

The committee, made up of national AI advisory committee members, provides the president of the United States with information on competitiveness, the status of science, and general AI-related workforce issues. In 2022, 27 members were appointed, and the impact of AI on the economy and the culture was not that big and serious.

Committee’s focus on AI literacy

With the advent of artificial intelligence, the spotlight has shifted to AI and its potential capacity to affect people’s everyday lives. This led to the founding of a Committee to guide the path of AI as it has become a topic of interest globally.

“‘We generally know technology introduces some level of disruption,’ said Reggie Townsend, VP, Data Ethics, SAS Institute Inc., and NAIAC committee member, ‘and we do not want the country to experience such a rate of disruption that can make it sustainable.’

“One of the things that we’re very concerned with is building up AI literacy across the country and at every level so that everyone has an option not only to understand AI but also to benefit from the opportunities offered by AI.”

Townsend talked with Vellante and Furrier, researchers with theCUBE, during a live stream on SAS Innovate, an SAS Cube broadcaster by SiliconJECT Media. She was accompanied by Miriam Vogel, who hails from EqualAI, and the president and chief executive officer. Together, they talked about the committee’s work on citizens’ advocacy roles.

Balancing innovation and  regulations

One of the main functions of the National AI Advisory Committee is citizens’ participation in AI processes. Vogel’s hat-tip to the President is the intelligence assigned to generate AI regulation while facilitating an open and consensus process. She invites community participation, and people can watch the committee even if they are far away. The website will conduct the committee’s work through livestreamed meetings.

Vogel adds that It is not a case of business as usual. It is time for everyone to get their hands dirty. The stakes are high, and Vogel is comforting himself  with the fact that people are going to rise to the challenge. Consequently, we will lack ready and competent workforce and the economy will be too weak if we do not have more people who are going to participate in the AI economy.

The chair of NAIAC believed that while regulation of technology in areas such as healthcare provides prospects for great premises, it can also jeopardize human life.

Vogel says that if well-crafted, regulation is a tool that sooner or later fosters people’s confidence, which is how it helps innovations. He also adds that you should have known that there is a cancer risk of up to 93% with AI help. If we check everything properly, the costs can be reduced by 50%, and the benefits can increase by 40%. We need to confirm that these systems make people happy so that they get their expected democracy flavor out of them.
